As the leading organization representing the German retail sector, the HDE serves as the authorized voice of the industry in dealings with policymakers at both federal and EU levels, as well as with other business sectors, the media, and the general public. In doing so, it relies on the broad support of state and regional associations as well as specialized trade associations.
The HDE represents its members' interests across all areas of economic and tax policy, legislation, and quality assurance. Consumer protection and environmental protection are accorded particular importance in this work.
As an umbrella organization for employers' associations, the HDE acts as the leading sectoral association within the Confederation of German Employers' Associations (BDA).
In total, 280,000 retail companies in Germany - employing three million people across 400,000 locations - generate annual revenue of approximately 630 billion euros.
